If you are under 65 and you are self employed or do not have creditable coverage through a place of employment, you can secure family or individual health coverage on the Maryland Exchange (Maryland Health Connection MHC). Some states use the Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM), Maryland has its own exchange. If your employer offers coverage that does not meet the minimum value standards, and affordability requirements, you may qualify for insurance through MHC. If you are offered coverage that meets those standards, you may still get a plan off of the exchange however you will not qualify for financial assistance.
(you may qualify for both)
cost sharing (you must choose a Silver Plan): You will have a lower deductible, copayments and coinsurance as well as a lower out of pocket max
a tax credit: This is based on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income, and you can choose to accept this credit monthly to lower your premium or in a lump sum at the end of the year. If you take this credit monthly and estimate less earnings than you actually make thus giving you too much of a credit, you will owe that money back
There are four levels of coverage:
Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum
Within these levels are:
HMO's (Health Maintenance Organizations) - lower monthly premiums, typically lower less out of pocket, in network providers, need referrals, must use Primary Care Physician as your first stop
PPO's (Preferred Provider Organizations) - more flexibility to choose doctors, out of network doctors may cost more, claim to not need referrals in general though some facilities still require them regardless
